ACT is an evidence-based, unique form of therapy born out of the behavioural therapy tradition. Like MBCT (mindfulness based cognitive therapy), it is one of what has been called the 3rd wave of behavioural therapies. These place a strong emphasis on mindfulness, acceptance and compassion and also involve behavioural changes. ACT was created by Dr. Stephen Hayes in the mid 1980’s and has been further developed by several of his colleagues, including Russ Harris. The main aim of ACT is to increase, through the development of psychological flexibility, the possibility for mindful, values-driven living.
